As she is preparing to run in the United States Olympic Trials next Sunday in Boston, legendary gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson says she just runs now for herself.

No, she won't make the Olympic team, but that is not the point.

"It’s just me against me. I want to run 2:50 at age 50," she says.

"Marathoning is a metaphor for life," adds Samuelson, "so there are a lot of parallels you can draw. I tell people to follow your dream, follow your heart, follow your passion, run your own race and believe in yourself. I think anybody who wants to succeed has to have passion. My love for this sport, you can't instill it in someone else."
