What’s Age Got to Do With It? Workouts for Women Over 40

There are many articles published online like this one, which claims that there are certain exercises that people over 40 should not do. Articles like these may attract attention since no one wants to do exercises that could cause an injury.  And everyone wants to find out what the best exercises are for women over 40. Unfortunately, these articles generally don’t give the right kind of guidance. They are poorly written with no author and no research cited or experts quoted.

Age is not the primary factor in the choice of an exercise.  The level of fitness and flexibility, absence of injury, and experience with the type of exercise are much more important.  Awareness of the proper technique in the performance of an exercise in order to avoid extreme positions that may overstretch joints, for example, is essential and actually just common sense. Any adult without physical limitations can use exercise machines safely if they set them up correctly and work within their limits.
