After last week’s East Coast hurricane, naysayers from Gawker to The Daily Beast to many of us wondered if the storm hadn’t been a teeny bit hyped. But with the death and damage tolls still being counted, Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano — one of WVFC’s favorite power women — came forward to emphasize the seriousness of Hurricane Irene, and that greater losses were partly stemmed by the combined efforts of many hardworking people. That includes Napolitano, who shows us why they came up with the idea of a super-agency like hers in the first place.
