Glamour: Nobody did it better than Duke Fulco di Verdura, jewelry designer to Hollywood’s stars back when Hollywood stars had faces—the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford. He was also the designer for that era’s elegant socialites, women like Slim Keith, who were known for their beauty and style. For these stunning women Fulco created the fabulous necklaces, brooches and bracelets they wore in their films and great parties, as WVFC Board Member Colleen Caslin, Verdura’s Chief Operating Officer, noted in an earlier post for Women’s Voices:
“[These stars] not only defined glamour for generations of women but continue to influence fashion today. These strong, independent women possessed great talent and firm control of their careers, and their personal styles have become enduring legacies.”
This Valentine’s Day, glamour lives on at Verdura in its jewelry designs inspired by the world’s greatest love stories. These gems were designed decades ago as love-tokens for the illustrious.

RUBY AND DIAMOND “WRAPPED HEART” BROOCH, VERDURA MUSEUM COLLECTION
Verdura’s Wrapped Heart Brooch underscored the romance between Tyrone Power and his wife, the actress Annabella. Tyrone presented her with Verdura’s Wrapped Sash Heart Brooch to “give his heart” to her on Valentine’s Day, 1940.
GOLD, ENAMEL AND DIAMOND “NIGHT AND DAY” LARIAT NECKLACE
VERDURA PAIR OF “NIGHT AND DAY” CUFFLINKS
For him and for her. Verdura created this set based on the hit romantic song by friend and financial backer Cole Porter. The set can be customized with a diamond to mark the locale of special importance, such as a wedding or honeymoon.
“Night and Day you are the one, only you beneath the moon and under the sun.” Cole Porter
18K ROSE GOLD “CRISS CROSS” CUFF
It was Linda Porter’s tradition to have Verdura create a special cigarette case to commemorate every one of Cole’s Broadway musicals. In 1940, for the Broadway musical “Panama Hattie,” Verdura criss-crossed strips of gold, simulating the weave of the Panama hat. His magical ability to spin straw into gold lives on today in the 18-karat yellow gold Criss-Cross Cuff, inspired by the design of this one-of-a kind cigarette case.
GOLD, BLACK JADE, DIAMOND, EMERALD, AMETHYST, AND RUBY “DEAR” BANGLE
Fulco’s interpretation of popular Victorian jewelry, spelling out romantic endearments in gemstones: Diamond, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby.
