Elaine Stritch, who died on July 17 at age 89, was unforgettable as Alec Baldwin’s mom, the irascible Colleen, on NBC’s 30 Rock—a matriarch so malevolent that she regularly confounded even her wily son (to the delight of all of us who watched).

On Friday, July 18, Baldwin went on NPR’s Brian Lehrer Show to share his memories of Stritch.

No one was funnier and had better timing than Elaine. I just sent Tina [Fey] an email yesterday saying I’ll always be grateful to you for casting Elaine as my mom, because she would walk in there and we just had to stand back and get out of her way and the rest of it would take care of itself.
