from the Women’s Voices Archives: ‘The Male Muse, Depicted by Women’

In this online group show curated for The New York Times, artist, writer and T Magazine contributor Leanne Shapton brought together the work of eight women who capture “the mysterious, beloved, scrutinized subject still rare in the art world: men.” Yes, you might be thinking “Men, rare in the art world, really!?” But, in the editor’s letter, T Magazine demonstrates how layered the portfolio is with these thoughtful questions:

“Historically images of the male form project strength and power, from heroes in the military and politics to titans of industry. But there is very little imagery depicting men simply going about their lives as men. What of the rich and varied moments that make up real life? Are these not fodder for art?”

And it’s the kind of man framed in the artists’ portraits that forces the viewer to think of the male muse and the great man differently: husbands, partners, sons.

Women know all too well the problematics of the male gaze. In this collection, where the female gaze rests on the male body, what is revealed is “men, in all their complexity.”
