Sheryl Sandberg, Single-Mom, Leans Into Single Motherhood

On the heels of Mother’s Day this past Sunday, Facebook COO and innovator of the “Lean In” movement Sheryl Sandberg took to Facebook to share, that on her second Mother’s Day as a single mother since the passing of her husband, “Some people felt that I did not spend enough time writing about the difficulties women face when they have an unsupportive partner or no partner at all . . . They were right.” It’s a full-circle moment for Sandberg, whose critics argued that much of her advice excluded working class women or women whose families were financially struggling. In response, Sandberg took full accountability:

“I will never experience and understand all of the challenges most single moms face, but I understand a lot more than I did a year ago,” she writes. “Our widespread cultural assumption that every child lives with a two-parent heterosexual married couple is out of date. Since the early 1970s, the number of single mothers in the United States has nearly doubled. Today, almost 30 percent of families with children are headed by a single parent, and 84 percent of those are led by a single mother. And yet our attitudes and our policies do not reflect this shift.”

Monica Lewinsky on Overcoming Shame

Last week, we reported on the social media harassment of women sportswriters. Listed as one of the 20th century’s most humiliated people, Monica Lewinsky became the penultimate example of public shaming. In an interview with The Guardian, Jon Ronson writes on how she is reclaiming her life and combating cyberbullying:

Now she’s a respected and perceptive anti-bullying advocate. She gives talks at Facebook, and at business conferences, on how to make the internet more compassionate. She helps out at anti-bullying organisations like Bystander Revolution, a site that offers video advice on what to do if you’re afraid to go to school, or if you’re a victim of cyberbullying.

Gloria Steinem’s New Show on VICELAND, “WOMAN”

Yesterday, feminist activist and writer Gloria Steinem launched a new internet TV show, WOMAN, on VICELAND. The show will focus on women who stand in the crosshairs at the intersection of violence and stability, of oppression and progress.
