Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central.
In The New York Times of Saturday, February 21, Jon Stewart was quoted as saying, “I think I got to a certain point where I thought, well, you shouldn’t stay somewhere just because you can.”
To this, Women’s Voices for Change says, “Precisely our point.”
Time was when women were expected to stay where they were. In their hometowns. In loveless marriages. In jobs that were secure. Even with the same hairstyle (Read Colm Toibin’s latest novel, Nora Webster, for a brilliant and excruciating examination of a woman’s self-torment over changing the color of, and the way she wore, her hair).
Of course, times did change, and women rapidly embraced mobility, change of careers, marital status, style, and even gender, but there are ways of changing that are more subtle and equally necessary. Women’s Voices for Change was built on the principle that reinvention—change of way of being—was not only possible but exciting and healthy. Reinvention can be undertaken as a way of un-staying, of examining and acting on being stuck in ways that have come to feel like “how it’s going to be from now on.”
How about our welcoming Jon Stewart into the Sisterhood of Reinvention by questioning the inevitability of “from now on” and reversing that old adage about the month of March?
Do you feel as if, of late, you’ve been living a little too much like a lamb? Forget the Year of the Sheep and decide to embrace your inner lioness somehow. We’re not telling you what to change, but after this much of a long, cold, dark winter, we are suggesting that you consider where you are staying just because you can. Maybe it’s only the color of your toenail polish, but changing something can be reinvigorating and can lead to changes that are re-defining in very positive ways.
