Movie Review: ‘Wadjda,’ an Arab Girl Who Refuses to Be Repressed

This delightful movie, set in Saudi Arabia, tells the story of 10-year old Wadjda, an independent young girl living with her mother in a conservative suburb of Riyadh. Her school insists she cover her head and trade in her high tops for more feminine footwear. Her father will likely take a second wife. Soon, Wadjda will be prohibited from playing with her best friend, Abdullah. Wadjda isn’t taking any of this lying down.
