Florence Foster Jenkins
What would any year at the movies be without our venerable big-screen goddess, Meryl Streep? (Can POTUS please create the U.S. equivalent of “Dame” already so we can give her a more official title?) As Florence Foster Jenkins (la Streep’s 78th role), she’s a would-be opera singer with more money than talent. Directed by Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena), and co-starring Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Helburg, and a gently aging Hugh Grant, the movie promises to be delightful … even if the singing itself is less than.
A Tale of Love and Darkness
With A Tale of Love and Darkness, Natalie Portman makes her feature-length directorial and scriptwriting debut. The multitalented young woman also stars. All in all, Portman spent nearly 10 years on the project. Based on Amos Oz’s autobiography, the film tells the story of the beginning of Israel through the eyes of renowned author, journalist and political advocate, focusing specifically on the relationship between Oz and his mother. The movie debuted at Cannes and has received mixed reviews at various festivals. But, Portman earns major points for skill and passion.
The Intervention
Another apparent labor of love, The Intervention was written by, directed by, and stars Clea DuVall. Billed as a modern-day Big Chill, the story revolves around a group of friends who have staged a weekend away to prop up one couple’s flailing marriage. Of course, other secrets are revealed along the way. The movie boasts a smart script, terrific cast of young women (Natasha Lyonne, Cobie Smulders), including one of my favorites, Melanie Lynskey, awarded a special jury prize at Sundance for the role.
Whether you prefer, comedy, suspense, documentary or drama, these titles will give you some exciting summertime movie options, with, by and for women. And, if you can’t find one or more of them locally, don’t be too distressed. We’ll always have Netflix.
Sure do appreciate this comprehensive line-up….
