Snowshoeing — A Great Way to Get Exercise

The first time I went snowshoeing, I was in western Michigan near the state forest. It had snowed for weeks and you couldn’t take a step outside without winding up knee deep in fluffy powder. Just walking to the car required you to lift your knees up like Monty Python giant walks. Then we put on the snowshoes, which were the old fashioned kind (see image 1) made out of wood, and we went for a hike. I couldn’t believe it, I felt like I was walking on a carpet. The shoes not only kept me from sinking in the snow, they also allowed me to walk over branches and other debris and still keep my balance. It turned even the thickest trails into smooth sailing. It was a beautiful, crisp sunny day and we hiked for over an hour and then came back for hot chocolate. READ MORE

    Yep, if you walk your dog every day in the woods, as we do, snowshoes are an essential piece of winter gear — as are ice cleats.
