Today is the day! It’s time for red carpets, teary speeches, and bets lost and won. We are live-blogging the Oscars tonight to cheer on our favorites and dish about the absurdities.
Starting at 7 p.m. (EST) tonight, Sunday, February 24, we’ll be watching the 85th Annual Academy Awards, hosted by Seth MacFarlane. As our Alexandra MacAaron noted, “the good news for female audiences of a certain age lay in the Best Supporting Actress category, where two actresses over the age of 60 were named, and the average age of the nominees is nearly 50.” The average age is 50! Well, that’s right up our alley.
Join us and cheer along. Click on our “Oscar Central” post, scroll down, and comment. We welcome your opinions—as short or long as you like. Comments will be screened before we post them, and our online chats are famously civil (if a little catty sometimes about fashion). Feel free to share links and photos—and Tweets @womensvoices, too! (Here’s how it went at last year’s Oscar night.)

it’s been a great night for the women. Would have been even better without the bitter taste left by the lousy “jokes.” And Daniel Day Lewis did a wonderful job! I love that he’s got Meryl Streep’s lipstick on his cheek.
Congrats to Jennifer Lawrence, though!
Oh, it’s a complete night when Meryl Streep joins the party.
It’s not the Oscars without Meryl.
And that, ladies, is why the Les Mis actresses had a wardrobe change. Poor Jennifer. Been there, done that! Oh well, at least she has her best actress Oscar to console her.
Ooof! What were you saying about dresses you can’t move in?
Jennifer Lawrence is so endearing!
Namaste Ang lee
Ang Lee was a surprise here.
Jane Fonda: class act and continues to have the voice
Jane Fonda has never looked so good! She’s bringing yellow back!

I think it was zellwegger’s affect. She looked stricken,
Maybe just reticent.
Two of my favorite actors talking about writing. Does it get better than this?
I thought Zellwegger looked fine. She looks like she’s at a much healthier weight than 10 years ago when she did Chicago. She was scary-skinny then.
Renee Zellwegger did not look well. Has she continued to perform?
I disagree. I thought Bassey sounded as good as she ever did.
Barbra…beautifully preserved voice (unlike poor Bassey’s). More lovely than it used to be. It seems to have lost its stridency.
Go Barbra! You all know I’ve got a special place in my heart for women performers. Have a peek at my website during this commercial to see the teaser on our new documentary about Elaine Stritch. Maybe they’ll ask her to perform next year at the Academy Awards – and at 88, she’s still got it!
I met Hamlisch. I walked his dogs when he went out of town. He was very nice to me.
Ah, Nora Ephron
Marvin Hamlish, what music!
and not seen Streisand in too long
I knew Streisand was coming on, know we know why, Nicely understated.
Barbra!
These In Memoriam slideshows always choke me up.
Right now my beagle is the most alert in the house, but she napped through the first 2 hours of the broadcast.
Easier to be on the West coast where it’s not yet 8…but too long
11:30pm, according to TiVo. I’m ready for bed now, though.
Anyone know when this is supposed to end?
I thought the video stuff going on behind Adele was distracting.
Adele: Nice to see the best living blues singer!
Adele is almost drowned out despite her powerful voice
I hope no one else has to sing after Adele- it would be cruel and unusual punishment having to follow that.
nice with the college kids…3 of each
until MacF commented
All the women in this category gave extraordinary performances. Not quite sure why Christopher Plummer characterized them as rather elderly. Anne Hathaway is a glorious young woman. And Sally Fields is a glorious one of us.
Anne Hathaway. Surprise … not!
Then there’s the risk of injury to actors and dresses if another actor steps on the train of your dress… *Rip* Someone falls and gets hurt, someone else ends up naked from the waist down… The joys of live performance and wardrobe malfunctions abound!
getting bored. actually trying a real gravatar
Ha! Can’t say that I have. (Or ever will.)
As someone who’s acted & studied design, there are several answers to your question, Alex. They could be going for a more unified look for the ensemble from a costuming standpoint- or it’s possible that the actresses couldn’t move quickly enough to hit their marks on stage in the designer dresses- ever try walking quickly in a trumpet skirt?
Loved the Les Miz ensemble! Russell Crowe had a bit of an earphone tape down problem, though.
Okay, so why did they have the “Les Mis” women change from contemporary evening gowns into other but equally contemporary evening gowns to sing “One Day More?”
Better than the usual musical extravaganzas…focus on the voices and characters
Oh to have Jennifer Hudson’s voice, boobs, and their ability to stay in their dress- if only I could be so lucky!
Don’t get me wrong. Performances are fantastic, Just not germane to the theme.
Okay, so in other words “Chicago” and “Dream Girls” paved the way for “Les Mis?” Whatever.
It’s one of those retrospectives. Jennifer Hudson’s delivering, though.
Overheard on Twitter. “Amour wins proving stories about older folks are interesting and valuable. No more invisible elders please!”
They did say the theme was music in the movies & they were covering movie musicals of the last ten years.
What’s up with the live performance rom “Chicago?” Yesterday’s news much?
I have to go see both documentaries. Really behind in film…
