Love exists in many forms, including the love of a city. And the love of a song. Rodgers and Hart wrote the song “Manhattan” in 1925, with music by Richard Rodgers and words by Lorenz Hart. The song was written for a musical revue called, Garrick Gaieties, and it became a hit. As part of the American songbook, “Manhattan” has been performed by many greats, including Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald. But my favorite rendition is by Blossom Dearie. Her phrasing of the song has a softness that beholds the love of the city it’s written for.
When I listen to it . . . I have a lingering memory of a wonderful friend who introduced me to Blossom Dearie over 28 years ago. To my heart, the song “Manhattan” will remain a valentine, forever.

I love Blossom, too
I am embarrassed to say I had never heard of Blossom. I can hear why you fell for her version of this fabulous song Barbara. Her voice is not a typical one; very youthful and simplistic.
