With temperatures soaring near 90 today, the Chicago Marathon was halted at 11:30 a.m., three and a half hours after the start, and hundreds of runners were hospitalized for heat-related conditions.

In the midst of it all, the Chicago Tribune caught up with 70-year-old Joan Berman, of Ann Arbor, Mich., who has run 17 marathons, including seven in Chicago, since she turned 60:

"I’m a school teacher. I don’t like dropping out," said Berman, who called it quits at the 8-mile mark. "But I know when to take a recess."
