Favorite Fall Indulgences: Karen Roberts, Designer

Karen Roberts is all about the dress. After a successful career of over 30 years on Wall Street, she found herself frustrated with the inability to find simple and elegant dresses for herself. So, Karen set out to produce sheath dresses (iconic silhouettes popularized in the 1950s and 60s) created from beautiful and imported fabrics. They are crafted and sewn in New York City’s Garment District for her demographic, which she calls “Baby Boomer Plus.”

Karen’s philosophy: “Confident and successful women over 40 do not want to dress like their 20-something year old daughters even if they can get away with it. They want to look beautiful and stylish in clothing that fits well, is not too tight or too short, and reflects their experience and life accomplishments.”  The dresses, in basic solid colors and beautiful patterns, are easy to wear and pair with jackets, scarves and pashminas. This season, Karen has added beautiful silk organza dusters that can be worn over the sheaths to make them even more cocktail and holiday party-ready. The dresses are available on the website KarenRobertsNewYork.com and through special events such as seasonal trunk shows, which have been held at The Carlyle and The Palace Hotels in New York City, and through its Holiday 2015 Collection!

Favorite Holiday Must Haves: My new Silk Organza Duster! They are beautiful and sheer with just a touch of sparkle! I can wear them over any of my Day to Evening, After Five and Holiday sheath dresses to make them even more elegant and special. They are available in Black, Navy and Pink/Copper. (And they look fabulous over your own slim pants paired with your favorite Holiday top!)  Perfect for warmer climates as well!

Favorite Accessories: I love my collection of Hermes and Ferragamo scarves which I wear year around with my dresses. They add the perfect dash of color!  And Pearls!  Natural, Cultured and Costume!  I love them all!  One of my newest pieces is a costume, resin choker necklace from the Fairchild Baldwin collection available through the John Barrett Salon at Bergdorf Goodman.

Favorite Designer: It’s hard to choose just one!  But those who peaked my interest in fashion in the first place, still remain my primary influences. In the early 1970s I was drawn to the simple and understated elegance of American designers like Calvin Klein, Halston and Ralph Lauren. I still look to their collections for line, texture and color.

Favorite Item of Clothing (besides your own dresses): I have a black silk and wool Prada jacket with 3/4 sleeves that I wear with my basic black sleeveless wool crepe Day Dress. It pulls the look together for meetings or dinners instantly!

Favorite Beauty Products: La Mer Moisturizing Cream and Body Lotion!  “I must go down to the seas again,” — the first line from the poem “Sea Fever”  by John Masefield is one of my absolute favorites!  I guess that is why I love LA Mer so much. . . the texture, the scent and of course the results keep it in my morning line up. . . and I wouldn’t be without my NARS “Sweet Dreams” lip gloss. A perfectly neutral and delicate color. I wear it every day!

Favorite Vacation Destination: Speaking of going down to the seas. . .My family and I have gone to Martha’s Vineyard every summer for 23 years. It is absolutely my daughter’s favorite destination in the U.S.  It is truly a beautiful and restful place to “vacate” and renew and we have our time-honored routines that we stick to every visit. Bike rides on State Beach Road from Edgartown to Oak Bluffs, visits to the Campgrounds, Alley’s General Store in West Tisbury, South Beach, Menemsha sunsets, Mad Max, evening strolls in the island towns, the annual Agricultural and Livestock Fair that has marked the end of the summer for the past 155 years! Every year. It just keeps getting better!

Favorite Hotels: Although I LOVE to travel Internationally, I am still, at heart, very New York City-centric. And again, I have two favorites. I absolutely love The Carlyle Hotel, the Upper East Side site of my first Trunk Show! It is New York to the hilt!  The Hotel itself is elegant and gracious as is the staff! Bemelmans Bar and Cafe Carlyle offer some of the best nights on the town in the City. The neighborhood is fabulous to walk around and enjoy shops, museums and galleries! So much fun!

And the site of my second trunk show, The New York Palace Hotel is my new favorite in midtown!  So professional and accommodating!  The staff is excellent and willing to go out of their way to help you achieve your business and personal goals.  Elegant rooms and very gracious, delicious and trendy room service options helped make my Fall/Winter 2015 trunk show a success!

Best Secret Tip: Keeping your styling simple is the best “acquired” advice I can pass on to any woman of any age. . . acquired by watching my style icons who are predictably, Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn. Too much of anything draws attention away from who and what we really are and what we want to say!
