Fashion Friday: Gretchen Fenton On Her Favorite Fall Indulgences

For the last 20 years, Gretchen Gunlocke Fenton has spent her time immersed in the world of style. And her résumé reads like a woman in a lifetime love affair with fashion. Over the course of her career, she has served as Glamour magazine’s Accessories Director, Town & Country’s Fashion Director and Vogue‘s Market Editor. At the moment, when Gretchen is not with her eight year-old twins Charlie and Nathalie, she spends her time and talent on styling shoots for clients such as Hearst Digital and Vogue Mexico and consulting for Figue and Joe Fresh.

What is your definition of Reinvention?

To start fresh every day. To always be moving forward and to put the past behind you and not linger on it. I think it is important to remind yourself that you can change your outlook with a fresh, positive perspective.

What are your favorite trends for fall?

I love the idea of season-less dressing: timeless pieces worn over and over again that are simple and luxurious but never boring. I have a black silk faille Oscar de la Renta skirt I’ve been wearing for years — it’s perfect with a striped t-shirt and sandals in spring; or a black tight sweater, pumps and a big necklace for going out in fall or winter.

I also have a Figue printed dress I wear all summer. When it gets colder, I put a black turtleneck under it and a cardigan over it. It’s the perfect polished bohemian fall look.

What are your five favorite fall essentials?

  • An updated striped sweater: I love this Gucci sweater with the gold metallic accents.
  • Leopard Coat: For years I’ve been coveting a friend’s leopard coat from Yves Solomon that they don’t make anymore. It’s collarless, to the knee and not too fluffy. . . I’m still searching for a perfect substitute.
  • Camel sweater: I’m not usually one for sayings on clothes but I think the Lingua Franca sweaters are adorable. I would get one in camel as a quirky take on a classic.
  • Flat boot: This all-season chelsea boot in rich havane leather is a capsule wardrobe must-have.
  • Black skirt: The lace up details on this skirt make it a modern must have for fall.

What are your favorite fall accessories?

  • Khaite collection: I’ve been eyeing these Khaite low-heeled shoes by Manolo Blahnik. It’s just a matter of days before I purchase them.
  • A velvet pump: Velvet is one of the bigger trends for fall and this blue pump is the perfect way to add subtle newness to your shoe wardrobe.
  • Bold earrings: A bigger earring in metal is an understated way to make a statement.

I don’t usually wear a fragrance as I don’t think they last on me. However, I do really like Aerin’s Tangire Vanille.

What is your favorite fall destination?

Southampton (Long Island) is one of my favorite places year round. In the fall, it is especially beautiful with incredible light at the beach.

What books, films and exhibitions are on your list to see and read this fall?

Books: I’m about to start reading The Mothers by Brit Bennett for my book club and I can’t wait to get into it. I love Ann Patchett, so her latest book Commonwealth is next on my list. I am also looking forward to reading Nutshell by Ian McEwan.

Exhibitions: I just saw the Kerry James Marshall exhibit at the Met Breuer and loved it. I can’t wait to see Agnes Martin at the Guggenheim and want to take my kids down to the New Museum to see Pipilotti Rist’s Pixel Forest.

Films: I love a good musical so I’m dying to see La La Land with Emma Stone and of course Jackie with Natalie Portman.
