When I shop, I like to keep these three things in mind: versatility, timelessness, and maximum calendar wear. Winnowing down to five pieces was challenging, but I wouldn’t try to get through winter without these items:   Special Tops. If only I had a dollar for every time a client needed “a special top to wear with black pants or jeans!”  When I see a top I love, I don’t hesitate for a nano to purchase it; in fact, I collect these pieces. I love the elegance of this navy/black lace top. It would be fabulous paired with skinny pants and boots, wide black jersey trousers with a red suede shoe, or with white jeans for a summer cocktail party.   Bright Skirts. Pencil silhouettes work best for me, but they also look fresh in A-line styles, if that is better suited to your body. They will instantly perk up your day! I wear them with crisp white shirts or a black turtleneck and boots. If I am wearing them at night, I might pair them with a sleeveless black cashmere shell, a chunky necklace, a large cuff, and a black D’Orsay 90mm pump. (Donna Karan Red Skirt  Long Cardigans. I adore them: I have them in a range of colors, though I most often reach for my midnight navy and taupe featherweight cashmere cardigans. They are incredibly versatile. I often throw them over my sleeveless sheath dresses to get many more months of wear out of them. Long cardigans look slimming and elegant with shells or silk blouses over skirts, trousers, and jeans.  I wouldn’t dream of getting on a plane without one. (Max Mara Cardigan)  Black Riding Boots. The ideal pair will have a bit of a stacked heel, a slim shaft and come just to the bottom of the knee. I wear mine night and day with skirts, dresses, trousers, over skinny jeans, and with wider boot-cut cords. (Soft Surroundings Rio Grande Riding Boot) Bracelets and Cuffs.  I don’t feel dressed without something important on my wrist. I love bold cuffs and link bracelets. Never underestimate the elan of an extra wide Hermès enamel bangle! Slip one on and anything you are wearing, even something as simple as a cashmere cable crewneck and jeans, will look effortlessly chic and more finished. (Hermès Bracelet

I love these choices, Debbi. I buy pencil skirts whenever they are on sale, but too often in black. The red skirt you show here is just terrific.

And, who wouldn’t want the Hermes bracelet?

Thanks for adding to our Winter Fashion Five Basics with such diversity and style.

I love seeing so many cardigan options out there. Glad they’re in fashion– and stockpiling them every chance I get!
