Beat Winter Blues with Smart Gear

Winter is here and many people have given up going outside to exercise because of the weather. That is a mistake that may lead to weight gain and deconditioning, and it can worsen our moods (see Seasonal Affective Disorder). Studies show that regular aerobic exercise done outside releases more serotonin (anti-depression hormone) than the same exercise done indoors. Do at least 30 minutes for a sure-fire boost.

But what if you hate the cold? Luckily, today’s exercise clothing manufacturers have designed high-tech gear to keep the cold and sweat away, and make you look great.

Unlike the old days when people donned baggy sweatpants and windbreakers to workout in the cold, now there are lots of different styles and exercise clothes with thermal qualities. The materials are high-tech, very comfortable and sleek. Just a thin of layer of these fabrics can keep you nice and toasty even when it is close to freezing outside. Below are some examples of fashionable (and reasonable) fitness gear.

Bottoms

Under Armour ColdGear Authentic. These are just amazing leggings at a great price. Sizing right now is limited to L, XL, and XXL, so they obviously are popular, however, not to worry, their website is full of lots of other great leggings for winter with reasonable pricing. The stats for most include:

  • Compression: Ultra-tight, second skin fit.
  • Dual-layer EVO ColdGear® construction combines a smooth, fast-drying exterior with a brushed, heat-trapping interior.
  • Signature Moisture Transport System wicks sweat to keep you dry and light.
  • Welded seams eliminate chafing no matter how hard you work.
  • Super minimal encased elastic waist delivers a smoother, more streamlined silhouette.
