The Mother of All Milestones: My “Child” Is 21!

I have four children, each of whom has reached some significant milestones this year: Wyatt, the 6-year-old, started first grade; Lucas, who’s 9, started his first “job” (an aspiring thespian and filmmaker, he’s an intern at a children’s theatre); and 12-year-old Eliza, my only girl, got her first period. But none of these “firsts” can top the one achieved by Will, my first-born: Just yesterday, he turned 21.

More than 20 years ago, while volunteering at a breast cancer screening clinic, I found myself, a non-medical professional, walking my fingertips across the body of a stranger... and that’s when I felt it, the sinister squatter that had taken up residence in the body of this woman who’d never laid eyes on me before. It was hard, the size and shape of a walnut, and lodged firmly just behind the nipple. My finger tripped over it, like a toe trips over a stone in soft sand.
