Mare Contrare A contributor to “Solares Hill Newspaper” and “The Jacksonville Union Times,” Mare Contrare is currently writing the book “Bullets in My Pocket,” based on her experiences and interviews while embedded with the U.S. Military. In 2011, Contrare was with the 2/3 Marine Corps infantry division deep in Helmand Province, in an all-male combat unit, for three weeks; then, at the personal request of Col. Kim and CSM Spano, she was invited to deploy with the Army’s 3BCT 25th Division and spent one month based out of Jalalabad, visiting combat outposts in Kunar and Nangarhar Provinces. Here she had the opportunity to interview women on the front lines, less than 10 miles from Pakistan. In 2012 she embedded back into Afghanistan for a third time.
