We know this year’s Academy Awards are unlikely to be as glamorous as 1956, when Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn were both presenters (at right, see them backstage). But they’ll be glam enough: an entire industry has grown around the gowns, the chats, the hullaballoo for what our Ro Howe aptly called “The Super Bowl for women.”
We’re not the only ones live-blogging this, of course, but we’ll bring back reports from the others, from Twitter, and from our own Oscar parties. We hope you do too – and will even send photos!
As we asked the other day:
Will the show itself feel fresh enough, even though it’s hosted by Billy Crystal – again?
Who will be the best dressed and who will make big dress mistakes? Who will win in the Meryl vs. Glenn faceoff?
Is there a film or actor you’re rooting for? A screenwriter like Kristin Wiig, or an editor like Thelma Schoonmaker?
Each of us at WVFC has specific questions in our minds, as well as films we WISH were in competition. But we’ll actually behave as we hope you do and put them in the comments below. Let the dialogue begin!
Goodnight, all! Thank you! Watching in your company made the Oscars much more interesting, and thought provoking. Paying attention with the Bechdel test in mind made me more aware of how Hollywood’s shortchanging women.
Ditto, Rachel
Pretty unmemorable Oscars. I think they need to (1) stop stiffing the women next year, and (2) hire Ricky Gervais as host.
Good night! Thanks so much for sharing this!
At least the night was worth it to see and hear the wonderful Meryl. Tomorrow is the day we begin to make a difference for women in film. Perhaps we have to see how little women are valued in the world of film to be reminded..yet again..that we have battles to fight. It is inexcusable for women to be invisible in this most visible of the arts.
Thanks for sharing the night.
Congrats to all of us for staying up!
No upsets tonight, huh? (Congrats to the Artist)
Drop a couch on him, Oprah!
A class act. Thank you, Meryl.
Meryl! YIPEEEEEEEEEEEE
WOW!!! Sorry for Viola but SO happy for Meryll!!!
Who doesn’t love Meryl?
Just makes me miss the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo again.
Ellen’s commercials are made of win.
Tres charmant, n’est-ce pas?
Thank you to the Americain who did my research about the first Oscar ceremony on le Wikipedia!
Cutie-pie won. (What I would have also said if George C had won)
Wow, so surprised it wasn’t Clooney!
Yes. I loved that “As you wish” for Peter Falk. Not sure about the Cleopatra bit for Taylor though,
Nicely done.
I always love the In Memoriam piece
Hey! Oprah got a Board of Governors Oscar! Very nice!
(I also really liked James Earl Jones saying “gobsmacked”)
I miss the animation festivals that used to show up in the repertory houses every year and usually contained at least a majority of the Oscar-nominated shorts.
I think Meryl Streep looks beautiful
Will the short films come out on DVD? The animated ones look fascinating!
With us, I mean.
A tweet from “Angelina Jolie’s Leg” @AngiesRightLeg I’m right here!!

In other words, someone at Salon agrees with me.
Yes, Chris. Saving Face sounds fantastic!
Oh no! The snack bimbos are back!
Even though I would have liked to see Wiig and Mumolo win, the women having to dumb down to act like men thing bugged me. Sisters, set your sights higher!
OK – at least we get a woman-centered film awarded Best Documentary. Now I really really want to see SAVING FACE.
So the only women to be visible so far are the cast of Bridesmaids..truly women acting like men.
Love Bridesmaids!
Weiners! OMG!!!!
A seriously unfortunate dress on dear Maya Rudolph
So Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo lose to… Woody Allen, of course.
They changed something this year as far as the songs so only two fit the criteria – sad. I always love the songs ie. Slumdog Millionaire!

Loved “Midnight in Paris.” But always disappointed when a winner is a no-show.
I don’t agree, Kristin. Jolie has a real brain, and needs to FEED it, ma’am!
Angelina Jolie looks like she could use a good meal. Much too skinny for a grown woman
and that is all she has to offer……
She’s beautiful but too thin!
Angelina is wearing a really hot dress. And of course she knows it!
Someone please give some snacks to Angelina Jolie? My teen daughter just asked if she’s anorexic!
All of whom, were they to EAT those snacks instead, would still be the size of a junior high-schooler?
Who said there weren’t enough women? What about all the Barbie dolls handing out snacks just now?
No music in the movies! BAH!
There were only 2 songs?
Tweet from Women’s Media Center: “To really “promote excellence in the filmmaking community,” we need to promote women’s participation and recognition! #WhereRWomen #Oscars
