We know this year’s Academy Awards are unlikely to be as glamorous as 1956,  when Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn were both presenters (at right, see them backstage). But they’ll be glam enough: an entire industry has grown around the gowns, the chats, the hullaballoo for what our Ro Howe aptly called   “The Super Bowl for women.”

We’re not the only ones live-blogging this, of course, but we’ll bring back reports from the others, from Twitter, and from our own Oscar parties. We hope you do too – and will even send photos!

As we asked the other day:

Will the show itself feel fresh enough, even though it’s hosted by Billy Crystal – again?

Who will be the best dressed and who will make big dress mistakes? Who will win in the Meryl vs. Glenn faceoff?

Is there a film or actor you’re rooting for? A screenwriter like Kristin Wiig, or an editor like Thelma Schoonmaker?

Each of us at WVFC has specific questions in our minds, as well as films we WISH were in competition. But we’ll actually behave as we hope you do and put them in the comments below. Let the dialogue begin!

I don’t know who started the trend of odd neck-clinging fru frus in gowns this year.

Right! The schtick between Ben Stiller and Emma Stone was extremely cringe-worthy. Glad she got a little of her own back at the end. (You know there’s something wrong when the bit calls for Ben Stiller to point out that someone is immature and over-the-top.)

We do understand the power of fashion and style when this otherwise attractive and talented young woman will only be rememmber for this dress..

Alex, so’s the writing of the past several minutes. Awkward dialog, and kind of insulting to women, no? Cringe!

When RDJ walked onstage, I started typing something about how Dr. Pat could keep Brad Pitt, because here’s my eye candy…
And then he started speaking, and it was awkward and gross.

And it serves as a summation of a summation of all the things that are wrong about the way women have been represented this year.

Given that all (most?) of the documentaries were very serious, the preamble was a little too silly.

Thanks, Patricia for your comment in the film. I’m sad to say I was turned off by the number of people who saw it because they felt like it was the politically correct thing to do. I didn’t go because I didn’t connect with the book – now I will see it.
