We know this year’s Academy Awards are unlikely to be as glamorous as 1956, when Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn were both presenters (at right, see them backstage). But they’ll be glam enough: an entire industry has grown around the gowns, the chats, the hullaballoo for what our Ro Howe aptly called “The Super Bowl for women.”
We’re not the only ones live-blogging this, of course, but we’ll bring back reports from the others, from Twitter, and from our own Oscar parties. We hope you do too – and will even send photos!
As we asked the other day:
Will the show itself feel fresh enough, even though it’s hosted by Billy Crystal – again?
Who will be the best dressed and who will make big dress mistakes? Who will win in the Meryl vs. Glenn faceoff?
Is there a film or actor you’re rooting for? A screenwriter like Kristin Wiig, or an editor like Thelma Schoonmaker?
Each of us at WVFC has specific questions in our minds, as well as films we WISH were in competition. But we’ll actually behave as we hope you do and put them in the comments below. Let the dialogue begin!
Wow!
SO WONDERFUL. I loved this character in Help. How beautiful she looks,
Yay! Octavia! So moving…
A beutiful acceptance speech as well
YEA!!! This is the must see film of the decade.
Separation HAS to win. Will never never forget this film. What is truth?
Kristin -good point re Moneyball (I tweeted it @womensvoices). Rachael Horovitz must be annoyed.
As for the current award, my host said “Making her look like Margaret Thatcher? That took more than a shovel?”
Acceptance speeches very nice so far. Meryl looks radiant.
When you think about it, he didn’t have one of the most important tools a costume designer works with: color. Everything had to happen through subtle shade differences and texture.
Great choice for Oscar for costume design: The Artist
🙁
OMG, you can see JLo’s nipple!
NONE of the movies in the montage pass the Bechdel Test.
Overall not thrilled with the fashion. Very unhappy that the best the writers could do for “Moneyball” in the opening monologue is to make fun of Jonah Hill’s weight loss. Really? 🙁
Music by Sheila E and Pharrell. Nice
Make that two for Hugo!
Who knew shoulder-length white hair on a man could look so good!
I never see Tom Hanks without thinking of him in Big. He still has a 7th grade boy’s face.
First award for Hugo!
Great musical number by Billy Crystal. I do not find him to be a tired brand…
He looks so good!
”Nothing can take the sting out of the bad economy than watching billionaires giving each other gold statues.” Thx, Billy.
I like the beard, Tom. On the other hand, Chris Rock needs to have LESS hair.
Glenn Close caused an entire generation of 80s men to be faithful to their wives!
Tom Hanks is a class act. Not gorgeous per se, but wonderful in a salt-of-the-earth way.
I can never look at Glenn Close without Fatal Attraction flashbacks…
A two-hour Red Carpet is about an hour too long for me
Portman’s jewelry may be the most imprssive of the night. She looks elegant in the deep red strapless gown.
George Clooney is so handsome, and so timelessly classy. Brad Pitt needs a haircut! And style tips from George Clooney.
Bullock looks terrfic and is so clear and thoughtful. She is a real beauty.
Glenn Close is lovely. I’m tempted to root for her….
Why didn’t Brad Pitt shampoo?
OMG! It is George again with the blond accessory…
Paltrow is wearing a dress that looks like she wants to be Grace Kelly (above).
I know you don’t like the dress, Dr. Pat. But I think Glenn Close is radiant! And I love that she isn’t all botoxed-out.
What do we think about Gwyneth?
Dr. Pat, never mind big, Diaz’s rear looked like a feather duster from the 30s.
Cameron Diaz is not articulate and why did she wear that dress that makes the BUTT so big?
Reminding me that I STILL need to see ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’….
@Chris JLo’s dress was also called “I stole some moldings from the Chrysler Building and I am wearing them barely covering my chest!”
Was that Penelope Cruz in lavender? glam: you’re doing it right! Swoon!
Penelope Cruz looks gorgeous. Love the dress!
Penelope Cruz in Armani…perfect color and shape. lovely diamonds.
Penelope Cruz is stunning! Different look for her. Very classic!
Agreed. That dress was called “I am Jennifer and these are my breasts.”
Nick Nolte has unfortunately not had a face lift and is either deaf or…
Agreed!
Jennifer Lopez did not choose a dress that flattered her figure, girls.
Michelle Williams again…with that fab brooch at the waist. Our own Colleen Caslin at Verdura predicted that we would be seeing large beautiful jewels at the waist in beutiful brooches. Great prediction Colleen!
Chris, I’m gonna call Joan Rivers. You should be part of the fashion police!
Tina Fey says she “feared the peplums.” I think she should have remained so.
