We know this year’s Academy Awards are unlikely to be as glamorous as 1956, when Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn were both presenters (at right, see them backstage). But they’ll be glam enough: an entire industry has grown around the gowns, the chats, the hullaballoo for what our Ro Howe aptly called “The Super Bowl for women.”
We’re not the only ones live-blogging this, of course, but we’ll bring back reports from the others, from Twitter, and from our own Oscar parties. We hope you do too – and will even send photos!
As we asked the other day:
Will the show itself feel fresh enough, even though it’s hosted by Billy Crystal – again?
Who will be the best dressed and who will make big dress mistakes? Who will win in the Meryl vs. Glenn faceoff?
Is there a film or actor you’re rooting for? A screenwriter like Kristin Wiig, or an editor like Thelma Schoonmaker?
Each of us at WVFC has specific questions in our minds, as well as films we WISH were in competition. But we’ll actually behave as we hope you do and put them in the comments below. Let the dialogue begin!
I adore Colin Firth. He was wonderful in Tinker Tailor…Such a wonderful film.
Hey Mary Kelly! How was the cocktail?
Okay, I’m in love with Colin Firth! (Anyone else?)
Love Tina Fey in Carolina Herrara, aubergine strapless, great hair. She looks glamorous.
Love Viola Davis’ emerald green color choice for her Vera Wang!
Yes! I love her hair!
Michelle Williams wearing ‘coral” Louis Vitton dress. Articulate, genuine, modest.
I wonder how Melanie Griffith would have looked by now WITHOUT the plastic surgery.
Emma Stone’s dress is just WEIRD, like someone bled all over her.
Emma Stone’s dress has too much fabric. What is it with these outfits that overcome the women?
Has anyone noticed the men with bad facelifts? Hair plugs are one thing, but this facelift thing for men is so wierd.
My 14-year old daughter thinks Emma Stone’s dress is too old-ladyish. (We agree … for a change.)
Carolina Herrara so elegant and intelligent as she discusses how she works with a potential client for Academy Awards. It should be chic, should be fun and should be elegant!
Rooney Mara is sick sick sick of being asked about the Mara family’s Giants. It is her night after all.
A tweet from Women’s Media Center: “womensmediacenter \”I try to keep my ladies happy” -Maya Rudolph #FemTV
I didn’t see Social Network yet….
That is Mommie’s pink! And I’m not sure she would think that this evening gown would be sexy enough for her.
She was pretty in The Social Network.
Rooney Mara has such beautiful skin and makeup. I had no idea she was so beautiful…certainly didn’t look like this in her film
Just switched to ABC, where Louise Roe is wearing your grandma’s pink.
I’m such a mush! I love it when people bring theirs moms or grandmoms.
This is my round up for a really bad weekend: Miss Congeniality 1&2, Legally Blond 1&2 and All of Donwton Abby…
Glenn Close has chosen an outfit that is wearing her. Too much material, Glenn.
Viola Davis has such fantastic posture. She is such a beautiful woman who makes everyone want to be over 40.
Ha! We just watched “Miss Congeniality” up in VT last week!
World Peace, Alex! When I am having a really bad day, I come home and watch Sandra Bullock in her turn as a beauty queen. Really serious drama.
Aw, I missed the Rainbow Connection? Just as well, possibly. The song always makes me cry.
Anyway, ladies, I’m joining the party!! Haven’t seen any of the noms this year. Oops! I sense a DVD binge in the making.
Tony Bennett said my George does “everything right”!
Yes, Dr. Pat. It really is a beauty pageant at this point.
I agree. I really wanted Meryl Streep to win tonight (it’s been a while), but I will be so happy for Viola Davis if it goes that way.
Leslie Mann in stunning navy blue dress and huge blue sapphire earrings; love this chance to be totally superficial.
Viola Davis in Vera Wang – STUNNING.
Ellie Kemper’s bangs are blinding her. “She’s hiding from the Vorlons, ” Rachel says.
For those who are Tweeting, great hashtag: #WhereRWomen?
They’re vying to be cast in the sequel maybe.
From my wife re Jessica Chastain’s dress: “They’re all trying to wear stuff that matches The Hunger Games.”
George Clooney with blond accessory on the Red Carpet. Glad I tuned in. Hi Girls
It’s called “Oscars” from ABC Digital. It’s free and it gives you access to 24 live cameras throughout the evening.
My husband, who just interrupted me and caused the typo above, wants everyone to know that there is a “Backstage at the Oscars” app. Checking it out now.
Although I don’t remember anyone asking the boys from Brokeback Mountain getting a flirty question like that.
“How different is it, kissing a girl?” That IS a more interesting question than “Who are you wearing?”
I’m sure they’ll have all the “bridesmaids” present something together, which is both fun but a little bit unfair.
Well, now that you mention it … it really wouldn’t be fair to all the stars if I outshone them would it? 😉 I mean, it’s their night, right?
Oh God, THAT’s Milla Jovavic? I still haven’t forgiven her for trying to play Joan of Arc, but she looks pretty glam…..
Alex, isn’t the joy of watching at home not HAVING to wear anything fancy?
Just pulled in from a ski weekend (haven’t even had a chance to change into my vintage Chanel and my Harry Winston’s). Are you ladies watching the E! red carpet show?
Not a betting woman, really. However, Himself and I just invented an Oscar drink — the Sophia Loren. Three parts club soda, two parts Campari, one part St. Germain floated on top. Try it for some Italian glamor!
Do tell us more!
They’re taking bets on “Who will win the Red Carpet.” What are your predictions?
“On the Red Carpet” pre-Oscar special is about to have a segment on SHOES!
Can’t wait . . .
And from Twitter, we learn one thing we’re missing: “Don’t forget that Kermie and @DarrenCriss are performing “Rainbow Connection” soon on the E! Oscar Pre-Show. What about moi?! #ERedCarpet
Time for the E! Red Carpet?
