The Valentine’s Day Romantic Movie Survey
Tell us your favorite romantic movie and help Women’s Voices raise up to $25,000 for BabyHeart, the International Children’s Heart Foundation, which treats children in developing countries born with heart disease.
Is it Now, Voyager, with its poignant renunciation scene, featuring Bette Davis uttering the best closing line in all moviedom?
Is it Sleepless in Seattle (or An Affair to Remember), with its easy-to-go-awry assignation at the top of the Empire State Building?
Is it, perhaps, the enduring, inarticulate affection between Rocky the Prizefighter and Adrian the Pet Shop Girl that softens you up?
Or might it be an unlikely newbie—say, Her?
On Saturday, February 15, Women’s Voices for Change will post the results of our new V-Day Survey, in which our readers collectively choose the best romantic movie of all time. Voting closes at midnight on Valentine’s Day, February 14.
There’s substance to this story. An anonymous Women’s Voices donor has offered to contribute $5 for every entry, up to a limit of $25,000. The proceeds will go to BabyHeart, the International Children’s Heart Foundation, which treats children in developing nations who are born with heart disease. The foundation provides direct care to as many children as possible in the short term; sends medications, surgical supplies, and diagnostic equipment to medical facilities in developing countries; and trains surgeons and medical staff so they ultimately can provide care for their own people.
How to Vote
No doubt you have several sentimental favorites. You get only one vote, though, and can nominate only one film—the one you crown as the best.
We’ll give you a byline for your mini-review. Simply name your movie and tell us why it’s so sterling in three sentences or less. The form below makes the voting easy. (Choosing “only one” is the hard part.) Each of us at Women’s Voices has her own favorite. We’ll be voting too.
gform.initializeOnLoaded( function() {gformInitSpinner( 1, 'https://womensvoicesforchange.org/wp-content/plugins/gravityforms/images/spinner.svg', true );jQuery('#gform_ajax_frame_1').on('load',function(){var contents = jQuery(this).contents().find('*').html();var is_postback = contents.indexOf('GF_AJAX_POSTBACK') >= 0;if(!is_postback){return;}var form_content = jQuery(this).contents().find('#gform_wrapper_1');var is_confirmation = jQuery(this).contents().find('#gform_confirmation_wrapper_1').length > 0;var is_redirect = contents.indexOf('gformRedirect(){') >= 0;var is_form = form_content.length > 0 && ! is_redirect && ! is_confirmation;var mt = parseInt(jQuery('html').css('margin-top'), 10) + parseInt(jQuery('body').css('margin-top'), 10) + 100;if(is_form){jQuery('#gform_wrapper_1').html(form_content.html());if(form_content.hasClass('gform_validation_error')){jQuery('#gform_wrapper_1').addClass('gform_validation_error');} else {jQuery('#gform_wrapper_1').removeClass('gform_validation_error');}setTimeout( function() { /* delay the scroll by 50 milliseconds to fix a bug in chrome */ }, 50 );if(window['gformInitDatepicker']) {gformInitDatepicker();}if(window['gformInitPriceFields']) {gformInitPriceFields();}var current_page = jQuery('#gform_source_page_number_1').val();gformInitSpinner( 1, 'https://womensvoicesforchange.org/wp-content/plugins/gravityforms/images/spinner.svg', true );jQuery(document).trigger('gform_page_loaded', [1, current_page]);window['gf_submitting_1'] = false;}else if(!is_redirect){var confirmation_content = jQuery(this).contents().find('.GF_AJAX_POSTBACK').html();if(!confirmation_content){confirmation_content = contents;}setTimeout(function(){jQuery('#gform_wrapper_1').replaceWith(confirmation_content);jQuery(document).trigger('gform_confirmation_loaded', [1]);window['gf_submitting_1'] = false;wp.a11y.speak(jQuery('#gform_confirmation_message_1').text());}, 50);}else{jQuery('#gform_1').append(contents);if(window['gformRedirect']) {gformRedirect();}}jQuery(document).trigger('gform_post_render', [1, current_page]);} );} );
WVFC thanks all of those who logged in to vote for or comment about their favorite romantic movie. This opportunity to partner with BabyHeart has been a wonderful and heart-warming experience for us.
We are so pleased that ICHF and staff worked so very hard to make this challenge a success. Happy Valentine’s Day to all.
Great job everyone!!
THANK YOU ICHF
GREAT WORK GO ICHF WE ARE ALWAYS WITH YOU.
The Holiday and It’s a Wonderful Life are my top choices. A little new and a little old! 🙂
Keep up the good work, thank you!
So many movies, so many types of love! Unrequited. Divided by time, places, people, etc. Sigh. Thanks so much.
Dear D.A.Wolf, I love that movie, too, and for all the same reasons.
North by Northwest (not a traditional love story) and Dead Poet’s Society — I am touched by how the students love their teacher. Not a traditional love story — but, a love so deep that it changes lives.
“Indiscreet” (1958) with Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant – Delicious! They’re mature, they’re in love, there’s a very mid-century (yet still relevant) plot twist, and they are equals in terms of stature, career, knowing themselves. I adore this film!
‘When Harry met Sally’ – this is my favorite romantic comedy. It is funny and heart warming and filled with possibility. The possibility we will meet that special person sometime in our life.
My favorite is “Memorias de Africa” with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. I just think is “The”perfect romantic movie
Oops! Was supposed to say ‘Four Weddings & a Funeral’. Tears & laughter (plus Hugh Grant!!)
Tears & laughter. A lovely film (plus Hugh Grant!!)
My favorite romantic movie is Once. It has amazing music and tells an ill-fated love story, which is the most heart-rending kind.
The Broadway musical is quite different but also very good.
Dirty Dancing!
Love the back & forth of this good-hearted survey: it’s what the internet is all about, n’est-ce pas? I entered early & would enter often if the rules allowed. Speaking of rules, I have to be cranky & say it: the directions include the boldfaced words “in three sentences or less.” Most all the respondents have been pithily entertaining, but several didn’t take those key words to heart. I’ll be coming back everyday for a fresh series of brief encounters–hoping for no long, long trailers.
great idea
Couldn’t help myself, Mary F: I voted for Funny Girl, probably the only movie I’ve seen more than once (except for Captain Ron, our annual pre-sailing warm-up)!
Is Funny Girl a romantic movie? Does it date me? “Oh my man, I love him so!!!”
What a great idea! Thanks to the anonymous WV donor. I am interested to see if the winner will be an old time classic or a movie with a modern take on romance.
