Oscar Central: Women’s Voices’ Live Blog of the 2017 Academy Awards

Today is the day! It’s time for red carpets, teary speeches, and bets lost and won. We are live-blogging the Oscars tonight to cheer on our favorites and dish about the absurdities.

Starting at 7 p.m. (EST) tonight, Sunday, February 26, we’ll be watching the 89th Annual Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

Join us right here, cheer along, scroll down, and comment. (Log in any time during the ceremony that you feel the urge to opine.) We welcome your remarks—as short or long as you like. Comments will be screened before we post them, and our online chats are famously civil (if a little catty sometimes about fashion). Feel free to share your point of view. Feel free to share links and photos—and Tweets @womensvoices, too!

And catch up on our Oscar-nominated movie coverage with Alex MacAaron’s reviews.

Get that prune off the screen, and have some pity for his 26-year-old wife.

I’ve only seen two of the Best Picture noms this year: Hidden Figures, and Manchester by the Sea. The former was a gift to the world; the latter was pretty damned excruciating.

I haven’t been able to see “Manchester By The Sea” yet (even though we live three towns away from the actual Manchester). It looks so bleak! Plus, the stories about Casey Affleck’s harassment allegations are disturbing.

I thought Manchester By The Sea was a downer downer downer. I know that people are sent to prison for life but I don’t want to pay to see them suffer.

Now that these shows are shot in high-def video, I’m made more and more aware how PAINFULLY thin these actors are. Even the men.

What our Alexandra MacAaron had to say about Dev Patel and “Lion”:
    https://womensvoicesforchange.org/movie-review-in-heartwarming-lion-theres-no-place-like-home.htm
“Lion, the wonderful film by first-time feature director Garth Davis, can be described many ways. It’s a rags-to-riches story of Dickensian proportion. It’s a gorgeous cinematic travelogue with magnificent footage of India and Australia. It’s a meditation on the meaning of self and family. But, perhaps above all else, it’s the most effective advertising ever made for Google’s virtual mapping application. And it’s true.”

Hi Chris! I remember when you were our Editor for Oscar-Night. Amazing isn’t it that womensvoicesforchange
celebrated its first ten years November 21st? It has been a marvelous year for Women’s Voices for Change. We have a wonderful board who support the work and growth of the site. 2017 saw the creation of a new site design overseen by Sherry Donovan and Barbara Chapman and our great IT guy Steve Bruner. And we can’t say enough wonderful things about our editors Grace Ali, Carla Baranauckas and Deb Harkins and our writers…Now back to the glamour and suspense.

I agree! As much as La La Land was a fun escape, there are more significant films nominated. Also, if you think about last year’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy, it would be a shame if the whitest movie nominated beat three powerful movies about the black American experience.
