Claudia Payne: ‘My Life Is My Indulgence’

20160624_152844Claudia Payne is a veteran editor. Over the course of more than 30 years at The New York Times, she has served in several editorial positions that relied on a strong sense of style, substance and taste. She’s been a department head for the Dining and Home Sections, Deputy Editor of the Times’ Sunday Magazine, Fashion Editor for the daily paper and the magazine. Notably, Claudia was part of the team that produced the Pulitzer-Prize-winning series on the origins of Al Qaeda in 2002. Now, at a fabulous 68 years old, the versatile editor is keen on modern and chic indulgences that work for her lifestyle. We caught up with Claudia to share with our readers her best summer indulgences.

What does “indulgence” mean to you?
My life is my indulgence: French beauty products, silk nighties, pillow cases and towels, cotton yoga wear at the beach, where I live most of the time, and leather jackets and skinny jeans when I’m in Manhattan.

What is your morning fitness routine?
My exercise is an hour-long morning walk with my Shih Tzu.

What is your skin and beauty care regimen during the summer months?
Dr. Hauschka’s body silk powder and a Japanese scalp tonic, Neoleaf by Milbon, that allows me to skip shampoo for days. I forgo heat styling completely except after highlights, which I get every two months. Since I’m on the beach, I skip toenail polish in favor of buffing with a pearlized paste I buy on Net-a-Porter.

I’m reading the works of Thomas Bernhard.

What are your absolute splurge-worthy treats?
Splurge-worthy seasonal accessories are cat-eye sunglasses — I’m loving Linda Farrow’s lucite frames. Big wispy scarfs in seashell colors. And this year, I’m also crushing on tiny earcuffs.

What’s your go-to beverage to cool down on hot summer days?
Tiny Footprint cold-brew coffee, a pitcher of which is always steeping in my refrigerator, and Kusmi’s Euphoria iced tea.

What is your sweet-tooth craving?
My indulgence is frozen bananas at night.

thc002_escentricmolecules_molecule01_1560x1960-0gpfwWhat fragrances are you wearing this season?
I search out obscure fragrances and buy samples before choosing a couple to combine. I’m wearing two diametrically opposed fragrances: the uncompromisingly modern Escentric Molecule No. 1 and the very retro Lipstick Rose by Frédéric Malle.

Tell us about your lingerie game?
I like lacy high-cut bras and panties so that if anything shows, it’ll be pretty.
