Who has a Women’s Cardiovascular Research and Education Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center named after her?
Who made the most Top Ten albums of any female recording artist?
Who has made albums rating Number One in sales in five consecutive decades?
The answer to all of the above is, of course, Barbra Streisand, who burst onto the scene in 1962 (photo, above left) and has never left it—and who celebrates her 70th birthday today.
Some of us first became aware of her in Funny Girl, some bowed to her virtuosity in Yentl or went to one of her hugely popular touring shows (like the one above right, in London in 2007). Even if you’ve done none of the above, you’ll turn around at the sound of the person who, as The New York Times observed in 1993, “enjoys a cultural status that only one other American entertainer, Frank Sinatra, has achieved in the last half century.” The video below, from AOL Moviefone, does a good job of describing her reinventions; at WVFC we salute a fellow spirit—who made her own terms long before doing this was fashionable and who has outlasted most of her naysayers.
