Today is the day! It’s time for red carpets, teary speeches, and bets lost and won. We are live-blogging the Oscars tonight to cheer on our favorites and dish about the absurdities.
Starting at 7 p.m. (EST) tonight, Sunday, February 24, we’ll be watching the 85th Annual Academy Awards, hosted by Seth MacFarlane. As our Alexandra MacAaron noted, “the good news for female audiences of a certain age lay in the Best Supporting Actress category, where two actresses over the age of 60 were named, and the average age of the nominees is nearly 50.” The average age is 50! Well, that’s right up our alley.
Join us and cheer along. Click on our “Oscar Central” post, scroll down, and comment. We welcome your opinions—as short or long as you like. Comments will be screened before we post them, and our online chats are famously civil (if a little catty sometimes about fashion). Feel free to share links and photos—and Tweets @womensvoices, too! (Here’s how it went at last year’s Oscar night.)

Amanda Seyfried looks exquisite! I can’t wait to find out who she is wearing. I would guess Marchessa. Will see!

Kerry Washington=Goddess
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:03 pm
Happy to see Robin Roberts there!
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:04 pm
I love Kristin Chenoweth. And so good to see Robin Roberts so well.
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:04 pm
Kristen Chenoweth must be wearing VERY high heels!
Deborah Harkins on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:06 pm
Love Jessica Chastain’s dress. I thought, “mermaid!”
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:09 pm
Chastain is definitely a class act. She just finished a run on Broadway starring in “The Heiress.”
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:09 pm
Yes, Jessica’s dress is amazing, channeling Marilyn!. But I look at her and think I do not want to see your movie and I really hope Jennifer Lawrence will win. Have wanted since I saw her in WINTER’S BONE. A fine actress.
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:11 pm
Kerry Washington is one of the folks I’m hoping for, even though I never saw Django.
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:11 pm
Winter’s Bone was an incredible movie. With a lot of talented women behind the camera too!
Editor @ Women's Voices on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:12 pm
A moment to look forward to: The incomparable Jane Fonda will be presenting later. She dazzles in yellow tonight!
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:12 pm
How much do we all LOVE Quvenzhane, ladies?
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:13 pm
Yeah, that director was one of many rooked.
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:14 pm
Is it just me, or is everyone on the sparkly dress bandwagon? I know it’s the Oscars, but it feels a bit like everyone is a disco ball.
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:15 pm
Completely agree, Chris!
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:15 pm
Meanwhile, for a kind of heady discussion of the Academy’s woman problem: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/soraya-chemaly/women-oscar-nominations_b_2743739.html?utm_hp_ref=tw

“American Werewolf in Paris?”
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:19 pm
And yeah, Quvenzhane’s awesome. If they’d nominated her for Supporting, I think she’d have a statue for sure.
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:20 pm
Quvenzhane is WOW! Such presence and good humor, no visible shakes, just excitement and poise. And the bag! All the girls will want one. I loved her as Hush Puppy, maybe the best performance of the year, saw it on the airplane and it was hard to see detail. must again.
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:20 pm
Jennifer Lawrence, you are the future
Editor @ Women's Voices on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:20 pm
Zoe Saldana’s tribute to another phenomenal woman is important- Nina Simone, who she plays in upcoming biopic. Lovely to see a young generation of actresses paying homage to those that paved the way.
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:21 pm
Catherine Zeta Jones always looks great. I love the pattern of the beadwork- it’s a true work of art.
b.elliott on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:22 pm
Chenoweth is really good at the one of the most difficult jobs in live entertainment.
Editor @ Women's Voices on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:22 pm
Catherine Zeta Jones is fabulous at 43!
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:23 pm
Lots of metallic gowns this year.
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:23 pm
I thought Chenowith was hysterical in GCB! I was sorry to see it go- that show nailed satire.
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:25 pm
Alex, I just tweeted your line about Quvenzhane- it’s too cool!
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:25 pm
Hi Phillygirl! I agree. GCB wasn’t afraid to offend people — and consequently offended a lot of people.
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:26 pm
Also on Twitter, from @TheAdvocateMag: Jennifer Lawrence hit the Oscars red carpet and said, “I’m starving! Is there food here?”
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:26 pm
Ha! Another reason to love Jennifer Lawrence!
Editor @ Women's Voices on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:31 pm
Just so we’re informed: “The median age of an Academy VOTER is 62. They are 94% Caucasian and 77% male.” Source: Women’s Media Center
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:31 pm
Hurray for color! I love Reese’s gown.
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:32 pm
Uh-oh. Apparently Reese didn’t get the metallic dress memo.
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:33 pm
I was speaking of the color blue of Reese’s dress, but I also support racial diversity.
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:34 pm
OK, let’s get relevant with a Google movie mash-up?
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:36 pm
Male actors have it so easy come Oscar time- they really have to TRY to look bad on the red carpet. Who doesn’t look good in a tux?
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:36 pm
The Academy makeup sounds like a very conservative political party. How much Hollywood politics goes into The Academy
choices? Should we trust them more than other award deciders?
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:38 pm
A slideahow of ALL the red-carpet looks: http://nymag.com/thecut/2013/02/oscars-2013-academy-awards-red-carpet-celebrities.html
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:40 pm
Toni – This year Oscar votes happened online. I wonder if the choices will differ from last year’s geriatric set.
Editor @ Women's Voices on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:42 pm
Charlize Theron, an Ode to White + Simplicity. Wow. Definitely one of our favorites so far.
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:43 pm
Nicole Kidman’s metallic dress was a nice departure from all the monochromatic ensembles. Charlize Theron always looks elegant, but even she has trouble pulling off the peplum.
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:44 pm
My mom and I were just talking about how pretty Charlize is with the short hair. (Any guesses about how we both wear ours?)
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:45 pm
Nicole and Charlize — both gorgeous — won Oscars when they let themselves look ugly onscreen. Anne Hathaway tonight?
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:45 pm
Chris: re Google movie mash-up: give us one
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:45 pm
More power to the short-haired girls. I’m too lazy- long hair is easier!
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:47 pm
Chris: that’s a step forward re voting online.
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:48 pm
Anyone else feel like some of Jennifer L.’s distinctiveness got muted by all that tulle?
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:49 pm
Charlize: how well she put the enormous value of a costume designer and her honest humility about what others do for her in terms of dress, hair, etc. She is more beautiful for her attitude.
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:50 pm
Jennifer Lawrence tulle-pretty restrictive for her genuine
energy and light
Editor @ Women's Voices on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:50 pm
Charlize Theron is no Oscar rookie. She won an Oscar in 2004 for “Monster” and was nominated again in 2006.
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:52 pm
Such a lot of pressure for the younger actresses in terms of what to wear.
Fran Carpentier on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:52 pm
Can someone tell me how Kristen Chenoweth got this hosting gig? I’m very happy for her. But not as happy for us!
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:53 pm
Okay, so we all love Quvenzhane AND don’t we also Love, Love, Love all the hot young studs who bring their mammas???
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:54 pm
Is their anything sexier than a hot guy bringing his mom as his date to the Oscars? Chris Evans could have brought a flavor of the month, but brought his mom instead.
Yeah, moms!
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:54 pm
I meant there, not their. oops.
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 7:55 pm

I’m all for sticking to a signature style, but Jennifer Aniston could have glammed up the hair a little- it IS the Oscars. Love the color of Jennifer Garner’s dress & the necklace- not so sure about the poofy back, though.
Editor @ Women's Voices on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:04 pm
Pure class and and all covered up. Go Halle Berry for rocking the long sleeves and still being one of the sexiest on the red carpet.
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:06 pm
Poor Adele! Mean people make comments about her size, but anyone would look huge next to Chenowith!
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:07 pm
I’m not quite sure how I feel about George Clooney with facial hair. Opinions, ladies?
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:07 pm
Did any of you ever hear the story of Sandra Bullock’s early career? She was told she “wasn’t pretty enough” for Hollywood.
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:08 pm
Sandra Bullock’s speaking style is wonderfully unpretentious.
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:08 pm
You’ve got to be kidding me- Sandra Bullock NOT pretty?
Deborah Harkins on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:09 pm
Long sleeves! Hooray. Love ‘em. Sleeves are more attractive than straplessness.
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:11 pm
In so many fields, the barriers are moving like glaciers for women. What is the quote? Everything Fred Astaire did, she had to do as well as he while dancing backward in high heels. Was that Ginger Rogers? For the first year, I am actually listening to red carpet conversing…the women are making intelligent statements. I am impressed
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:12 pm

Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:20 pm
What I love most is this conversation among talented women..funny, insightful, alert…….
Editor @ Women's Voices on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:21 pm
Some good news! The two most Oscar nominated films of all time had women as their lead characters– All About Eve & Titanic. Take that all those barriers!
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:23 pm
I know that most of the women are svelte. Their dresses seemed to bloat them…even Anne Hathaway looked bottom heavy! I prefer the sleek, straight dresses, wishing I could wear them
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:25 pm
I agree with Toni, this conversation is my favorite- that being able to eat a sundae while wearing comfy clothes while the beautiful people are sucking in their guts and wearing corsets!

Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:39 pm
This “boobs” number is HORRIFIC, and being a “joke” doesn’t help matters.
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:39 pm
ICK to some of McFarland’s jokes-Shatner a welcome presence
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 8:40 pm

Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:06 pm
Okay, so why did they have the “Les Mis” women change from contemporary evening gowns into other but equally contemporary evening gowns to sing “One Day More?”
b.elliott on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:09 pm
Loved the Les Miz ensemble! Russell Crowe had a bit of an earphone tape down problem, though.
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:10 pm
As someone who’s acted & studied design, there are several answers to your question, Alex. They could be going for a more unified look for the ensemble from a costuming standpoint- or it’s possible that the actresses couldn’t move quickly enough to hit their marks on stage in the designer dresses- ever try walking quickly in a trumpet skirt?
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:13 pm
Ha! Can’t say that I have. (Or ever will.)
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:13 pm
getting bored. actually trying a real gravatar
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:17 pm
Then there’s the risk of injury to actors and dresses if another actor steps on the train of your dress… *Rip* Someone falls and gets hurt, someone else ends up naked from the waist down… The joys of live performance and wardrobe malfunctions abound!
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:24 pm
Anne Hathaway. Surprise … not!
Elizabeth Hemmerdinger on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:27 pm
All the women in this category gave extraordinary performances. Not quite sure why Christopher Plummer characterized them as rather elderly. Anne Hathaway is a glorious young woman. And Sally Fields is a glorious one of us.
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:31 pm
nice with the college kids…3 of each

I hope no one else has to sing after Adele- it would be cruel and unusual punishment having to follow that.
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:38 pm
Adele is almost drowned out despite her powerful voice
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:39 pm
Adele: Nice to see the best living blues singer!
Elizabeth Hemmerdinger on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:41 pm
I thought the video stuff going on behind Adele was distracting.
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:44 pm
Anyone know when this is supposed to end?
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:47 pm
11:30pm, according to TiVo. I’m ready for bed now, though.
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:50 pm
Easier to be on the West coast where it’s not yet 8…but too long
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:53 pm
Right now my beagle is the most alert in the house, but she napped through the first 2 hours of the broadcast.
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 10:58 pm
These In Memoriam slideshows always choke me up.
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:01 pm
Barbra!
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:02 pm
I knew Streisand was coming on, know we know why, Nicely understated.
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:02 pm
Ah, Nora Ephron
Marvin Hamlish, what music!
and not seen Streisand in too long
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:03 pm
I met Hamlisch. I walked his dogs when he went out of town. He was very nice to me.
Elizabeth Hemmerdinger on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:06 pm
Go Barbra! You all know I’ve got a special place in my heart for women performers. Have a peek at my website during this commercial to see the teaser on our new documentary about Elaine Stritch. Maybe they’ll ask her to perform next year at the Academy Awards – and at 88, she’s still got it!
Deborah Harkins on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:08 pm
Barbra…beautifully preserved voice (unlike poor Bassey’s). More lovely than it used to be. It seems to have lost its stridency.
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:12 pm
I disagree. I thought Bassey sounded as good as she ever did.
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:13 pm
Renee Zellwegger did not look well. Has she continued to perform?
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:16 pm
I thought Zellwegger looked fine. She looks like she’s at a much healthier weight than 10 years ago when she did Chicago. She was scary-skinny then.
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:24 pm
Two of my favorite actors talking about writing. Does it get better than this?
Tonimyers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:30 pm
I think it was zellwegger’s affect. She looked stricken,
Maybe just reticent.

Jane Fonda: class act and continues to have the voice
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:35 pm
Ang Lee was a surprise here.

Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:45 pm
Jennifer Lawrence is so endearing!
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:45 pm
Ooof! What were you saying about dresses you can’t move in?
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:46 pm
And that, ladies, is why the Les Mis actresses had a wardrobe change. Poor Jennifer. Been there, done that! Oh well, at least she has her best actress Oscar to console her.
Editor @ Women's Voices on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:46 pm
It’s not the Oscars without Meryl.
Elizabeth Hemmerdinger on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:46 pm
Oh, it’s a complete night when Meryl Streep joins the party.
Chris Lombardi on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:46 pm
Congrats to Jennifer Lawrence, though!
Elizabeth Hemmerdinger on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:49 pm
it’s been a great night for the women. Would have been even better without the bitter taste left by the lousy “jokes.” And Daniel Day Lewis did a wonderful job! I love that he’s got Meryl Streep’s lipstick on his cheek.
Alex MacAaron on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:54 pm
The first lady is the icing on the Oscars cake!
phillygirl on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:55 pm
The first lady is best-dressed on my list!
Toni Myers on Sun, 24th Feb 2013 11:56 pm
I love you Michelle ! Thanks for doing it

Chris Lombardi on Mon, 25th Feb 2013 12:04 am
Kristin Chenoweth can send us to bed, finally….
Chris Lombardi on Mon, 25th Feb 2013 12:04 am
Night all!
phillygirl on Mon, 25th Feb 2013 12:05 am
I agree with Elizabeth H. This is horrible! How tacky
Paige Morrow Kimball on Mon, 25th Feb 2013 12:07 am
Bill Westenhoffer who won for Best Visual Effects, was trying to say something kind about Rhythm and Hues – the company that did all the art renderings on the film, that’s now going bankrupt. 300 people just lost their jobs and they couldn’t even let the guy finish the sentence! Couldn’t they have given him 5 more seconds to speak. Would they have done at to Robert DeNiro?
Paige Morrow Kimball on Mon, 25th Feb 2013 12:08 am
Halle Berry makes me proud to be in my 40s! She’s just lovely.
Paige Morrow Kimball on Mon, 25th Feb 2013 12:09 am
Wow. Shirley Bassey. A True legend!
