Hi Julia.
I was going through some old files and came across a postcard you gave me, way, way back in Baltimore. You probably don't remember me, but I stayed with you and David for one night and then never talked to you again. I was involved with Dance New England and looked you guys up as I was traveling through.
I'm happy to see you followed your bliss and are living the life of an artist! Bravo!
I'm living in Port Townsend, WA, being an inventor and programmer. It would be fun to chat with you: g.funky@hotmail.com
Take care,
GeorgeM

Hey Julia,
I finally had the chance to sit down and read this with the time and space it deserves. What a great story! The artwork is excellent too, of course... I'm forwarding this to a couple of friends for inspiration.

Thank you to everybody for taking the time to read this, and look at my images, and leave your comments.
I did want to respond to Alan's question about taking more than a day for some of the pieces. In fact, sometimes I do. The most common thing I do is bring the piece to the completion of a phase each day, and post it in that state. For instance, the first day might be pencil sketch, the second day clean it up and ink in the lines, the third day background washes, the fourth and fifth days, paint in the details.
My favorite piece that I did this way was of my reflection in a teapot, and when I figured out how to do animations on my blog, the first thing I did was animate this so you can see the piece develop day by day. Check it out at http://studiojuliakay.com/portraitproject/2008/09/slideshow-test.html , and get the animation to start by moving your cursor over the picture.
Thanks again, everyone!
Julia

Julia, your article gave me a better understanding of the development of your portrait project. I do think, though, it is an unfair limitation to force yourself to finish a portrait every day. You could accomplish a greater range of work if you were more flexible in the time frame allowed. I would also love to see you make more of those wonderful color-shadow paintings based on plant shapes. Your dedication to art, now as always, is inspiring to us all.

Wow Julia, I enjoyed your pictures and LOVED the description of your personal artistic development... really an inspiration for all of us who've thought, "I don't have enough time to make art" -- you sure debunked that myth! And showed us that facing your fear grew you in all the ways you felt insufficient. Thank you.
